What the Evidence Shows
Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine and grapes, gained enormous attention after studies showed it activated sirtuins (longevity-related proteins) and extended lifespan in model organisms. In mice fed a high-fat diet, resveratrol improved metabolic health and survival. However, translation to humans has been disappointing. The doses used in animal studies (equivalent to hundreds of bottles of wine per day in humans) far exceed what supplements provide. Human RCTs using 150-2000 mg/day have shown inconsistent results on metabolic markers, blood pressure, and inflammation. A large observational study in Italian wine-drinking elderly found no relationship between resveratrol metabolites in urine and longevity. The compound also has poor bioavailability โ it is rapidly metabolized by the liver and barely reaches tissues at meaningful concentrations.
