What the Evidence Shows
The relationship between residential greenness and health outcomes has become an active area of environmental epidemiology. Rojas-Rueda et al. (2019) conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 longitudinal studies involving over 8 million participants, finding that increased residential greenness (measured by NDVI satellite data) was associated with significantly reduced all-cause mortality. The pooled hazard ratio suggested approximately 4% reduction in mortality per 0.1-unit increase in surrounding greenness. James et al. (2016) analyzed data from 108,630 women in the Nurses' Health Study, finding that those living in areas with the highest quintile of greenness had 12% lower all-cause mortality compared to the lowest quintile, with the strongest associations for respiratory and cancer mortality. Mechanisms appeared to operate through improved mental health, social engagement, and physical activity. Gascon et al. (2016) reviewed 40 studies examining green space and various health outcomes, finding generally consistent associations with improved cardiovascular health, reduced obesity, and better mental health, though heterogeneity in green space measurement was noted. However, Wheeler et al. (2015) found no significant association between green space and mortality in a large English cohort study after adequate adjustment for socioeconomic deprivation, suggesting that much of the apparent green space benefit may be explained by socioeconomic confounding. Wealthier populations tend to live in greener areas while also having better healthcare access, nutrition, and lower occupational hazards.
