What It Is
Blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) are among the richest dietary sources of anthocyanins — the blue-purple flavonoid pigments responsible for their color and much of their biological activity. A one-cup serving provides approximately 150-300mg of anthocyanins (primarily malvidin, delphinidin, and cyanidin glycosides), along with other polyphenols, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and fiber. Blueberries have one of the highest antioxidant capacities among commonly consumed fruits and have been extensively studied in the context of cognitive aging and neuroprotection. Wild blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) contain approximately twice the anthocyanin concentration of cultivated varieties.
How It Works
Anthocyanins from blueberries cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in brain regions associated with learning and memory (hippocampus, cortex). They appear to enhance neuronal signaling through activation of CREB (cAMP response element-binding protein) and BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) pathways, supporting synaptic plasticity.
