What the Evidence Shows
Walnuts contain a unique combination of brain-relevant nutrients: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA omega-3, 2.5g per ounce), polyphenols (ellagitannins, pedunculagin), vitamin E (gamma-tocopherol), folate, and melatonin. This nutritional profile provides biological plausibility for neuroprotective effects through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and membrane-integrity pathways. The WAHA trial (Walnuts and Healthy Aging), the largest and longest RCT to date, randomized 708 older adults to add ~30g walnuts/day or control diet for 2 years. While the primary cognitive composite outcome showed no significant difference, secondary analyses revealed that walnuts significantly slowed cognitive decline in a high-risk subgroup (APOE4 carriers, smokers) and improved fMRI measures of brain connectivity. Earlier, smaller trials showed more positive results: Pribis et al. (2012) found 8 weeks of walnut supplementation improved inferential reasoning in college students, and an RCT in elderly showed improved working memory and processing speed after 6 months. Animal studies consistently demonstrate walnut supplementation reduces amyloid-beta accumulation, enhances neurogenesis, and improves spatial memory in aged rodents. However, several concerns temper enthusiasm. The California Walnut Commission funds the majority of walnut-brain research, introducing potential bias. Effect sizes in positive trials are small (d=0.2-0.3). The WAHA trial's null primary outcome means the most rigorous test found walnuts did not broadly prevent cognitive decline. Benefits may be restricted to specific at-risk subgroups rather than the general population, and confounding by overall diet quality and nut-consumer healthy behaviors remains possible in observational studies.
