What the Evidence Shows
Neuroimaging studies consistently find that experienced meditators have structural differences compared to non-meditators: increased gray matter density in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and insula; increased cortical thickness in attention-related areas; and reduced amygdala volume. Longitudinal studies (8-week programs like MBSR) show pre-to-post changes in some of these same regions, suggesting the practice itself drives the changes rather than pre-existing differences. Functional MRI studies show reduced default mode network activity (less mind-wandering) and decreased amygdala reactivity to emotional stimuli. However, the field has significant methodological concerns: small sample sizes, lack of active control groups, publication bias toward positive results, and the difficulty of blinding participants to a meditation intervention. Effect sizes, while statistically significant, are often small to moderate.
