What the Evidence Shows
The relationship between physical activity and depression prevention is supported by robust epidemiological evidence from prospective cohort studies and meta-analyses. Schuch et al. (2018) conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 49 prospective studies encompassing over 266,000 participants and found that individuals with high physical activity levels had significantly lower odds of developing depression (adjusted OR 0.83) compared to those with low activity. Importantly, this protective effect was consistent across age groups, geographical regions, and both sexes. Pearce et al. (2022) further strengthened this evidence with an analysis of 15 prospective studies including over 190,000 participants, demonstrating a clear dose-response curve: adults accumulating 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week had 25% lower risk of depression compared to inactive adults. Notably, even half the recommended dose (75 min/week) conferred meaningful protection. Harvey et al. (2018) used data from the HUNT cohort study (33,908 participants followed for 11 years) showing that 12% of future depression cases could have been prevented if all participants performed at least one hour of physical activity per week.
