What the Evidence Shows

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is essential for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia and fatigue, and correcting deficiency reliably improves energy levels. This has led to widespread marketing of B12 supplements and injections as energy boosters for the general population. However, B12 operates on a binary threshold: below adequate levels, function is impaired; above adequate levels, additional B12 provides no extra benefit. The body cannot use supraphysiological B12 to enhance energy production beyond normal capacity. Multiple studies giving B12 injections or high-dose oral supplements to non-deficient individuals show no improvement in energy, fatigue scores, or physical performance. The popularity of B12 injections for energy likely reflects placebo effects, which are particularly strong for injectable treatments. Groups at genuine risk of deficiency (vegans, older adults with reduced absorption, those on metformin or PPIs) do benefit from supplementation, but this is correcting deficiency, not enhancing normal function.

Why this disagrees:

When B12 status is adequate, additional supplementation raises serum levels without producing functional benefits. The metabolic pathways requiring B12 are already saturated at normal physiological concentrations, making excess B12 unable to enhance energy production.
