What the Evidence Shows
The question of whether vaccines cause autism has been exhaustively studied and definitively answered: they do not. The concern originated from a 1998 Lancet paper by Andrew Wakefield that suggested a link between the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine and autism. This paper was subsequently retracted in 2010 after investigations revealed fraudulent data manipulation, undisclosed financial conflicts of interest, and ethical violations. Wakefield was stripped of his medical license. Since then, numerous large-scale epidemiological studies have found no association between any vaccine and autism. Taylor et al. (2002) followed over 537,000 Danish children and found no increased risk of autism in vaccinated versus unvaccinated children, with no association with age at vaccination or time since vaccination. Most recently, Hviid et al. (2019) studied over 650,000 Danish children born between 1999 and 2010 and found no increased risk of autism after MMR vaccination, even among children with autism risk factors such as older siblings with autism.
