In this context, it can reduce absorption of certain drugs and chemicals by 50-75%. However, the wellness industry has extrapolated this acute medical application into claims about general 'detoxification'—removing accumulated toxins, heavy metals, or metabolic byproducts from the body. These claims lack biological plausibility for several reasons. First, activated charcoal works only within the GI lumen and does not enter systemic circulation; it cannot extract toxins already absorbed into tissues or blood. Second, the body already possesses highly effective detoxification systems (liver cytochrome P450 enzymes, kidney filtration, lung gas exchange) that handle routine metabolic waste. Third, charcoal binds nutrients, medications, and beneficial compounds as readily as supposed toxins, potentially causing nutritional depletion or drug interactions. Why this disagrees:

Systemic toxins already absorbed into tissues cannot be removed by an agent confined to the GI lumen. Activated charcoal can only prevent absorption of ingested compounds present in the gut at the time of charcoal administration. Chronic low-level exposures from air, skin, and previously absorbed compounds are physiologically inaccessible to oral charcoal.
