The relationship between pet ownership and cardiovascular health has attracted scientific interest for decades. Mubanga et al. (2017) analyzed Swedish national registry data covering 3.4 million adults and found dog ownership associated with 33% lower mortality risk in single-person households and 11% lower risk in multi-person households, with particularly strong associations for cardiovascular causes. The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a scientific statement (Levine et al. 2013) acknowledging that pet ownership, particularly dog ownership, is 'probably associated' with reduced cardiovascular risk and decreased all-cause mortality, though stopping short of recommending pet adoption for this purpose.
