What the Evidence Shows
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in skeletal muscle and plasma, and it plays important roles in immune cell function, intestinal barrier integrity, and nitrogen transport. During intense or prolonged exercise, plasma glutamine levels can decline by 20-25%, which led to the hypothesis that supplementation would support recovery and immune function. However, well-controlled studies in healthy athletes with adequate protein intake consistently fail to show benefits for muscle soreness, strength recovery, or glycogen replenishment. The body's endogenous glutamine production (40-80g/day) far exceeds typical supplement doses (5-20g/day), and skeletal muscle serves as a large reservoir. In clinical populations (burn patients, ICU patients, post-surgical), glutamine supplementation has clearer benefits because these populations experience genuine glutamine depletion. For healthy athletes consuming adequate protein (1.6-2.2g/kg/day), additional glutamine provides no measurable advantage over the glutamine already present in dietary protein.
