What the Evidence Shows
The question of whether organic food reduces cancer risk gained attention after the 2018 NutriNet-Santé cohort study (n=68,946) reported that high organic food consumers had a 25% lower overall cancer risk compared to non-consumers. Specifically, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and postmenopausal breast cancer showed the strongest associations. The proposed mechanism centers on reduced pesticide exposure—organophosphates and certain herbicides are classified as probable carcinogens by IARC. However, significant limitations exist. The study was observational and susceptible to confounding: organic food consumers tend to be wealthier, more educated, eat more fruits and vegetables overall, exercise more, smoke less, and have lower BMI—all independently protective against cancer. While statistical adjustments were made for these factors, residual confounding is likely substantial. A UK Million Women Study (n=623,080) found no overall cancer risk reduction with organic food consumption, except a borderline association with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Pesticide residue levels on conventional produce are typically well below safety thresholds set by regulatory agencies. The absolute risk difference, even accepting the French study's findings, is very small—approximately 0.6% over 4.5 years. The benefit of eating more fruits and vegetables far exceeds any additional benefit from choosing organic versions.

Why this disagrees:
The much larger UK study found no meaningful cancer protection from organic food, suggesting the French study's findings may reflect residual confounding by lifestyle factors that were incompletely controlled for statistically.
