What the Evidence Shows
The association between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk is among the most robust findings in cancer epidemiology. Bagnardi et al. (2015) conducted a comprehensive dose-response meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Cancer, pooling data from over 200 studies and demonstrating a linear increase in breast cancer risk with increasing alcohol intake, with no safe threshold identified. Even light drinking (up to 1 drink/day) was associated with statistically significant excess risk. Chen et al. (2011) analyzed data from the Nurses' Health Study, following over 100,000 women for 28 years, and found that as few as 3-6 drinks per week increased breast cancer risk, with the relationship strengthening at higher consumption levels.
