What the Evidence Shows
Earthing (or grounding) involves direct skin contact with the Earth's surface or use of conductive devices connected to the ground port of electrical outlets, purportedly allowing transfer of free electrons from the Earth into the body. Proponents claim this reduces inflammation, normalizes cortisol rhythms, and improves sleep. The primary sleep study cited by advocates is Ghaly and Teplitz (2004), which used conductive mattress pads in 12 participants and reported improved subjective sleep quality and normalized cortisol curves. However, this study lacked proper blinding (participants knew they were grounded), used no validated sleep instruments, had no true placebo control, and the sample size of 12 provides virtually no statistical power. A subsequent study by Chevalier et al. (2012) in 28 participants using grounded sleeping pads reported reduced pain and stress but again suffered from inadequate blinding and conflict of interest (authors held patents on grounding products). The purported mechanism—that earth-surface electrons neutralize free radicals—lacks biophysical plausibility at the claimed magnitudes; the electron transfer rates possible through skin contact are negligible compared to endogenous antioxidant systems. No studies have used polysomnography to measure objective sleep architecture changes from earthing. The entire literature consists of approximately 20 studies, nearly all published in a single journal (Journal of Environmental and Public Health), conducted by a small group of affiliated researchers with commercial ties to grounding product companies. Independent replication by researchers without financial conflicts is essentially absent.
