Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid that constitutes approximately 15% of the phospholipid pool in the human brain, concentrated in the inner leaflet of neuronal cell membranes. It plays essential roles in cell signaling, membrane fluidity, and neurotransmitter release. Brain PS levels decline with age, potentially contributing to cognitive decline. Originally studied using bovine-derived PS (which contained DHA-PS), modern supplements use soy or sunflower-derived PS. How It Works
Phosphatidylserine supports cognitive function through multiple mechanisms. In neuronal membranes, it maintains optimal fluidity and facilitates neurotransmitter release (particularly acetylcholine and dopamine) by supporting synaptic vesicle fusion.
