Marine Collagen
Marine collagen (fish-derived collagen peptides) has growing evidence for improving skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth. It is absorbed as bioactive peptides that may stimulate endogenous collagen synthesis in skin and joints.
Quick Verdict
Good evidence for skin health benefits including hydration and elasticity, with additional joint support.
A reasonable supplement for skin aging concerns with consistent evidence from multiple trials. Take 5-10g daily with vitamin C for at least 8 weeks before evaluating. Fish allergy is the only real contraindication.

What It Is
Marine collagen is derived from the skin, scales, and bones of fish (primarily cod, tilapia, or salmon). It consists predominantly of Type I collagen, the same type that constitutes 80% of human skin collagen. Through enzymatic hydrolysis, fish collagen is broken into small bioactive peptides (2-5 kDa) that are readily absorbed in the GI tract. Marine collagen peptides have higher bioavailability than bovine collagen due to their smaller particle size and lower molecular weight. They are also an option for those avoiding mammalian-sourced products.
How It Works
Orally ingested collagen peptides are absorbed as di- and tripeptides (particularly hydroxyproline-containing peptides like Pro-Hyp and Hyp-Gly) that accumulate in skin tissue. These peptides stimulate fibroblast proliferation and upregulate endogenous collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid synthesis. They also inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that break down existing collagen. In joints, collagen peptides may stimulate chondrocyte metabolism and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, supporting cartilage maintenance. The mechanism is not simply providing building blocks but rather signaling fibroblasts and chondrocytes to increase their synthetic activity.
Evidence by Goal
skin health
Multiple RCTs and meta-analyses show significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth with 8-12 weeks of oral collagen peptide supplementation.
joint health
Moderate evidence for reduced joint pain and improved function, particularly in activity-related joint discomfort and early osteoarthritis.
Dosage & Usage
Standard Dose
5-10g/day hydrolyzed marine collagen
Loading Protocol
No loading phase; benefits typically apparent after 4-8 weeks
Timing
Any time of day; can be dissolved in beverages (heat-stable)
Best Form
Hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides (powder or capsules)
๐ What to Expect
Week 1-4
Marine collagen peptides absorbed. Fibroblast stimulation beginning.
Week 4-8
Skin hydration may begin improving. Nail strength increasing.
Week 8-12
Measurable skin elasticity and hydration improvements in studies.
Month 3-6
Full skin benefits. Joint comfort may improve with continued use.
๐ฏ How to Know It's Working
Skin hydration improved after 4-8 weeks
Fine lines appear slightly reduced
Hair and nails stronger
If not working: If no skin improvement after 12 weeks at 5-10g daily, ensure vitamin C intake is adequate for collagen synthesis.
