What It Is
Lutein and zeaxanthin are xanthophyll carotenoids found naturally in dark leafy greens, egg yolks, and orange-yellow fruits and vegetables. Unlike other carotenoids, they selectively accumulate in the macula of the eye, forming macular pigment that acts as a natural blue-light filter and antioxidant shield. The body cannot synthesize these compounds, making dietary or supplemental intake essential. They are often supplemented together because they work synergistically in the retina, with zeaxanthin concentrated in the central macula and lutein in the peripheral macula. How It Works
Lutein and zeaxanthin protect the retina through two primary mechanisms. First, they absorb high-energy blue and ultraviolet light before it reaches the photoreceptors, reducing phototoxic damage.
