What the Evidence Shows

The relationship between muscle mass and resting metabolism is real but commonly exaggerated in fitness media. Skeletal muscle does have a higher metabolic rate than adipose tissue (approximately 13 kcal/kg/day for muscle vs. 4.5 kcal/kg/day for fat), but this differential is modest. A realistic muscle gain of 2-4 kg from a resistance training program would increase RMR by only 26-52 kcal/day—equivalent to a small apple. Meta-analyses of resistance training interventions find average RMR increases of 50-100 kcal/day, suggesting additional mechanisms beyond muscle mass alone. These include elevated post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), increased protein turnover, enhanced sympathetic nervous system activity, and the metabolic cost of ongoing tissue remodeling. The acute EPOC from a resistance training session can elevate metabolism by 5-10% for 24-72 hours post-exercise, contributing meaningfully to total daily energy expenditure. However, metabolic adaptation occurs: as the body acclimates to training, the magnitude of EPOC diminishes. For body composition, the more important benefit may be that maintaining muscle mass during caloric restriction preserves RMR, preventing the metabolic slowdown that typically accompanies weight loss. In this 'defensive' role, resistance training is clearly valuable for long-term weight management, even if the absolute RMR boost is modest.
