What the Evidence Shows

Spirulina is a blue-green algae rich in phycocyanin, a pigment with demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates spirulina supplementation can modulate immune function through several mechanisms: enhancing natural killer (NK) cell activity, increasing interferon-gamma production, and promoting immunoglobulin A secretion. A randomized controlled trial in older adults showed improved NK cell cytotoxicity after 12 weeks of supplementation at 2g/day. Animal studies consistently demonstrate immunostimulatory effects, though translation to humans remains uncertain. The active compound phycocyanin appears to activate the NF-kB pathway and stimulate both innate and adaptive immune responses. However, human trials are generally small (20-80 participants), short in duration (4-12 weeks), and often conducted in specific populations like elderly or immunocompromised individuals. The heterogeneity of spirulina products and dosages further complicates interpretation.
