A 2012 meta-analysis of clinical trials found capsaicinoid consumption increased energy expenditure by approximately 50 kcal/day (roughly 2% of daily expenditure) and reduced appetite modestly. A 2012 study in Chemical Senses confirmed capsaicin's acute thermogenic effect and noted mild appetite reduction in a crossover design. A 2013 study found red pepper consumption increased satiety and reduced subsequent energy intake at the next meal. The mechanism involves activation of TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 1) receptors, which stimulate sympathetic nervous system activity, increase norepinephrine release, activate brown adipose tissue, and enhance fat oxidation.
