What the Evidence Shows

Capsaicin and other capsaicinoids have been studied for thermogenic and appetite-suppressing properties. A 2012 meta-analysis of clinical trials found capsaicinoid consumption increased energy expenditure by approximately 50 kcal/day (roughly 2% of daily expenditure) and reduced appetite modestly. A 2012 study in Chemical Senses confirmed capsaicin's acute thermogenic effect and noted mild appetite reduction in a crossover design. A 2013 study found red pepper consumption increased satiety and reduced subsequent energy intake at the next meal. The mechanism involves activation of TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 1) receptors, which stimulate sympathetic nervous system activity, increase norepinephrine release, activate brown adipose tissue, and enhance fat oxidation. In vitro and animal studies show capsaicin promotes lipolysis and inhibits adipogenesis. However, the clinical significance of these effects is negligible for weight management. The 50 kcal/day additional expenditure would theoretically produce less than 2.5 kg of weight loss per year assuming no compensatory changes, but in practice, metabolic adaptation and behavioral compensation eliminate even this small effect. A 2007 study testing capsinoids (non-pungent capsaicin analogs) found no significant effect on body fat over 12 weeks of supplementation.
