A 2019 UK cohort study found dose-response relationships between social media use and depressive symptoms. A 2020 systematic review synthesized multiple studies finding consistent, though small, associations between social media use and depression, anxiety, and psychological distress in adolescents. However, a highly influential 2019 Nature Human Behaviour analysis by Orben and Przybylski re-analyzed three large datasets and found that social media use accounted for only 0.4% of variation in adolescent well-being—comparable to the effect of wearing glasses or eating potatoes. This analysis highlighted that previous studies often cherry-picked outcomes from large datasets and used significance thresholds inappropriately. The relationship appears bidirectional, with depressed teens potentially using social media more, rather than social media causing depression.
