What the Evidence Shows
The relationship between eating speed and energy intake is supported by both experimental and observational evidence. A 2014 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that slower eating rates consistently reduced acute food intake across laboratory studies, with an average reduction of approximately 70 kcal per meal. A large Japanese cohort meta-analysis (2015) found that fast eating speed was significantly associated with higher BMI and obesity risk. Mechanistically, slower eating allows more time for gut-brain satiety signaling (CCK, PYY, GLP-1) to develop before overconsumption occurs. A 2008 controlled study showed that eating slowly increased satiety hormones and reduced hunger ratings. However, a 2014 study in overweight individuals found that while eating slowly reduced eating rate, it did not significantly reduce total energy intake in that population, suggesting that the effect may be attenuated in people with established overeating patterns or leptin resistance.
