What the Evidence Shows
While aerobic exercise has received more attention for mental health benefits, resistance training (weight lifting, bodyweight exercises) has emerged as independently anxiolytic. Gordon et al. (2017) published a comprehensive meta-analysis in Sports Medicine examining 16 RCTs and found resistance exercise training significantly reduced anxiety symptoms with a moderate effect size (Δ=0.31), regardless of health status, sex, or training protocol specifics. Benefits were observed in both clinically anxious populations and those with subclinical anxiety. Notably, effects were significant whether participants were healthy, physically ill, or had mental health conditions.
