The tempo of music matters, with faster tempos (120-140 bpm) most beneficial for moderate-intensity exercise. Self-selected music consistently outperforms researcher-selected tracks, likely due to stronger personal associations and motivational qualities. However, benefits are intensity-dependent. During maximal effort exercise approaching physiological limits, internal sensory cues overwhelm external distractions, reducing music's effectiveness. A 2014 study found no significant performance benefit of music during maximal sprint efforts, suggesting that at high intensities, physiological feedback dominates attention regardless of external stimuli.
