What the Evidence Shows

Fasted cardio—performing aerobic exercise after an overnight fast—increases acute fat oxidation during the exercise session because glycogen and insulin levels are lower, promoting greater reliance on fatty acids for fuel. This biochemical fact is well-established. However, the body compensates over 24 hours: higher fat oxidation during exercise is offset by lower fat oxidation (and higher carbohydrate oxidation) during the remainder of the day. Studies measuring 24-hour substrate oxidation using metabolic chambers show no meaningful difference in total fat burned between fasted and fed-state exercise when total caloric intake and expenditure are matched. Long-term body composition studies (4-6 weeks) comparing fasted vs. fed cardio with controlled caloric deficits show no difference in fat loss. The body regulates fuel utilization over 24-hour periods, making the timing of the fed/fasted state irrelevant when total energy balance is equivalent.
