What the Evidence Shows
The relationship between regular exercise and sleep quality has been extensively studied across diverse populations. Kredlow et al. (2015) conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine encompassing both acute and chronic exercise effects, finding significant improvements in total sleep time, sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, and sleep quality. The effects were most pronounced for chronic exercise programs lasting at least 4 weeks. Yang et al. (2012) specifically examined exercise interventions in populations with sleep complaints, demonstrating moderate improvements in subjective sleep quality measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Kelley and Kelley (2017) focused on self-reported sleep outcomes across 13 RCTs and confirmed statistically significant improvements from exercise interventions. The mechanisms are multifactorial: exercise promotes adenosine accumulation, regulates circadian rhythms through core body temperature changes, reduces anxiety and rumination, and increases slow-wave sleep. However, Youngstedt et al.
