The conventional wisdom appears to originate from two theoretical concerns: exercise-induced sympathetic activation and elevated core body temperature delaying sleep onset. However, empirical data show these physiological responses normalize within 60-90 minutes of exercise cessation for moderate-intensity activity. The nuance lies in exercise intensity and timing proximity to bed. Vigorous exercise (above 80% max heart rate) ending less than 60 minutes before attempted sleep does show some sleep-disrupting effects in a minority of studies, primarily by delaying sleep onset by 10-15 minutes. However, moderate-intensity exercise (40-70% max HR) performed 1-4 hours before bed consistently shows neutral or positive effects on polysomnographic sleep measures. Individual variability is substantial—some people are more sensitive to evening physiological arousal than others. For the general population, the evidence strongly suggests that evening exercise should not be discouraged, as the overall health benefits of exercise at any time outweigh the minimal risk of sleep disruption for all but the most intense efforts immediately before bed.
