However, moderate-intensity exercise (40-70% max HR) performed 1-4 hours before bed consistently shows neutral or positive effects on polysomnographic sleep measures. Individual variability is substantial—some people are more sensitive to evening physiological arousal than others. For the general population, the evidence strongly suggests that evening exercise should not be discouraged, as the overall health benefits of exercise at any time outweigh the minimal risk of sleep disruption for all but the most intense efforts immediately before bed.
