What the Evidence Shows

Research on chewing gum and cognition began in earnest after early studies reported improved memory and attention during gum chewing. The proposed mechanisms include increased cerebral blood flow (10-15% increase measured by transcranial Doppler), heightened arousal via mastication-induced cortical activation, and glucose delivery from sugar-containing gum. Some studies show modest improvements in sustained attention tasks and faster reaction times during prolonged vigilance tests. However, the literature is highly inconsistent. A comprehensive meta-analysis found that while gum chewing produced small positive effects on alertness and sustained attention (d = 0.10-0.15), effects on working memory and executive function were null or negative. Importantly, several well-controlled studies found that gum chewing actually impairs short-term memory and serial recall tasks, possibly due to articulatory interference with phonological loop rehearsal. The timing of gum chewing matters: benefits appear concentrated in the first 15-20 minutes before habituating. Study designs vary enormously in gum type (sugar vs sugar-free), chewing duration, cognitive tests used, and whether gum is chewed during or before testing. Industry funding is prevalent. The overall evidence suggests any cognitive effects of gum chewing are small, task-specific, and transient.
