What the Evidence Shows
Caffeine is the world's most consumed psychoactive substance, and decades of research provide strong evidence on its safety profile. Large prospective cohort studies consistently show that moderate coffee/caffeine consumption is associated with reduced all-cause mortality, lower risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, and some cancers. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant polyphenols (in coffee), adenosine receptor modulation, and enhanced metabolic function. Risks at moderate doses are minimal for healthy adults. However, excessive caffeine (>600mg/day) can cause anxiety, insomnia, increased heart rate, and GI issues. Pregnant women should limit to 200mg/day due to fetal growth concerns. Individuals with anxiety disorders, arrhythmias, or slow caffeine metabolism (CYP1A2 variants) may need to restrict intake. Physical dependence develops but withdrawal is mild and short-lived (1-2 days of headache).
